A Mat-Su state senator has introduced legislation that would upend Alaska’s longstanding system for choosing judges, the latest salvo on a long running effort by conservatives to reshape the state’s judicial selection system.
Senate Bill 14, introduced in January by Sen. Mike Shower, R-Wasilla, would allow the governor to directly appoint judges to the District Court and to the Court of Appeals but not the Superior Court or Alaska Supreme Court, which can’t be changed without a constitutional amendment. ....

New laws passed by the Parliament today will make it easier for Victorian workers to get treatment and support for work-related mental health injuries as soon as they need it.
Delivering on a key election commitment, the
Workplace Injury Rehabilitation and Compensation Amendment (Provisional Payments) Act 2020 removes barriers for workers seeking urgent mental health support.
The new laws mean that Victorian workers who seek compensation for a mental health injury under WorkCover will receive payments for reasonable medical expenses while they await the outcome of their claim.
Covering expenses such as GP visits, psychiatrist or psychologist appointments and medication, the payments scheme ensures workers will not have to delay getting the care they deserve, while covering stressful out of pocket costs. ....

Creating Certainty for Industry and Territorians: New Planning Amendment Bill Introduced

The Territory Labor Government is improving certainty and understanding around planning decisions with the Planning Amendment Bill 2021 introduced into Parliament today.
The purpose of this Bill is to amend the Planning Act 1999 to create certainty for industry, proponents and the community in decisions relating to planning scheme amendments.
Key features of the Bill are:
To protect the validity of future decisions by a Minister in relation to planning scheme amendments.
To put beyond doubt the validity of the decision by the Minister to refuse a request to rezone the land at 16 and 25 Blake Street, The Gardens (Lots 6907 and 6908, Town of Darwin) from community purposes to a special use zone that would have facilitated high and medium density residential development, which does not fit with the existing character of The Gardens. ....
